MISERERE MEI
choir & circus

This October, a series of unique concerts will bring together two very different art forms: choral music from past centuries and contemporary aerial acrobatics. The performances aim to explore how music and movement can complement each other and create new ways of experiencing familiar works.

BelCantoMusicae has been presenting classical a cappella music to the public for over 30 years. At the center of the program is Miserere Mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri — a well-known Renaissance piece for double choir that has been passed down through generations. This version features a solo quartet with a 16-year-old soprano, highlighting the connection between tradition and the next generation of performers.

The aerial element is created and performed by Alma Charlotte, a young artist working in the field of contemporary circus. Her choreography is inspired by the title of the piece ("Have mercy on me") and by a quote from American writer Glennon Doyle Melton about personal transformation:
"Growing up is an unbecoming. My healing has been a peeling away of
costume after costume until here I am, still and naked and unashamed,
stripped down to my real identity. I have unbecome."
The performance explores themes of identity, vulnerability, and inner growth. The aerialist is physically supported by the voices of the choir, and the music reflects the non-linear path of personal development.

Admission is free, with donations welcome. One of the key goals of the project is to make this type of performance accessible to a broad audience and to encourage people to engage with art forms they may not usually encounter. By combining classical music and circus arts, the concert invites audiences to step beyond the familiar and discover new connections between sound, space, and the human body.
